P.C Sushama Memorial Fund

14 May 2016 - MASW launched the MASW-Sushama Memorial Fund in conjunction with its 43rd Annual General Meeting held at Crystal Crown Hotel, Petaling Jaya.

The Memorial Fund, first of its kind for MASW, is named after Miss P.C. Sushama who was the country's first local trained almoner (medical social worker) and a founding member of MASW. She was also the first associate professor in social work in Malaysia at Universiti Sains Malaysia in the late 70s and 80s. Miss Sushama passed away on 14 April 2014.

A total of 52 people, made up of the her family and close friends and members of MASW were present. Three special guests were invited to share their memories of the late Miss Sushama. They were Datuk Abdullah Malim Baginda, former Director General of Social Welfare Malaysia and first President of MASW; Mrs Grace Ng, former medical social worker at UHKL, and Associate Professor Siti Hawa Ali, former student of Miss Sushama and currently social work lecturer at USM Kubang Kerian Campus.

Mr. P.C. Shivadas, the brother of Miss Sushama, addressed the audience before handing over a cheque of RM30,000 to MASW. Two long-time friends, Dr A. Pathmanathan, and Mrs. Susheila McCoy also presented cheque donations for the memorial fund.

MASW decided to set up this fund after the family of the late Ms Sushama donated her book collections and pledged a donation of RM30,000 to the association. MASW also contribute RM20,000 and continue to raise more funds to support professional social work activities such as awards for outstanding social work research and publications in the near future. Through this memorial fund, MASW hopes to continue the legacy of Miss Sushama's dedication and devotion in upholding the professionalism and integrity of the profession.
